What is Reiki? Where did it come from? IS it hocus-pocus or what is it?
Reiki is a method of natural healing based on the application of universal life force energy. Reiki is a system of energy balancing, alternative medicine and healing originally developed in Japan over 90 years ago. Reiki has become more and more popular with time. And it is estimated that in 2006 approximately 1,200,000 adults and 161,000 children received one or more Reiki alternative medicine treatments, in the U.S alone.
Reiki is a spiritual practice developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist, which has since been adapted by various teachers of varying traditions. It uses a technique commonly called palm healing or hands-on-healing as a form of alternative medicine and is sometimes classified as oriental medicine by some professional medical bodies. Through the use of this technique, practitioners believe that they are transferring universal energy (i.e., reiki) in the form of qi (Japanese: ki) through the palms, which they believe allows for self-healing and a state of equilibrium.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.”
A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
The English word reiki derives from the Japanese load-word reiki (“mysterious atmosphere”), which derives from the Chinese load-word língqì (“supernatural influence”). Its earliest recorded usage in English dates to 1975. Instead of the usual transliteration, some English-language author’s pseudo-translate reiki as “universal life energy”.
It compounds the words rei (“spirit, miraculous, divine”) and ki (“gas, vital energy, breath of life, consciousness”). The ki (better known as Chinese qi or ch’i) in reiki is understood as meaning “spiritual energy; vital energy; life fore; energy of life”. Some reiki translation equivalents from Japanese-English dictionaries are: “feeling of mystery”, “an atmosphere (feeling) of mystery”, and “an ethereal atmosphere (that prevails in the sacred precincts of a shrine); (feel, sense) a spiritual (divine) presence.” Besides the usual Sino-Japanese pronunciation reiki, these kanji, have an alternate Japanese reading, namely ryōge, meaning “demon; ghost” (especially in spirit possession).
|Reiki energy is regarded as life energy at its most effective-with the maximum vibration. It is considered to have an almost divine quality and as such includes everything, in a world where problems and disorders are deemed to be due to the feeling of detachment from the world. There is no division of Reiki energy into positive and negative forms but when a person undergoes a session of therapy, they allow the energy to be taken into themselves with beneficial effects. Essentially, those receiving Reiki energy decide subconsciously just how much of the life energy is taken in.Those who use Reiki regularly often find they are more joyful, lively and their own in-built energy is enhanced-almost as if their batteries had been fully charged! Existing conflicts within the person are broken down and there is a greater vitality, leading to relaxation and a stimulation of the body. As this improvement develops, the natural processes of renewal and removal of toxins are enhanced and rendered more effective, ultimately opening up more of the body to the life energy.Body organs such as the skin, and protective systems such as the immune system are improved providing the individual is prepared regularly to undertake Reiki and in the first place to undergo an attunement or initiation into Reiki energy. The initiation is merely a means whereby the universal life energy is bestowed through the Reiki master. The master acts as a channel and a link with God to release the healing power.
An initiation is not absolutely essential but it allows the individual access to the universal life energy, which is used rather than their own life energy. Also, an initiation conveys a greater capacity for using Reiki energy, with no associated tiredness and further, it provides a protective mechanism against any negative manifestations.
The awareness that an unseen energy flows through all living things and directly affects the quality of a person’s health has been part of the wisdom of many cultures since ancient times. The life energy goes by many names. It has also been called orgone energy and elan vital, and science refers to it as bio-field energy.
When your life energy is out of balance and low, it becomes more difficult to deal with daily stress; often causing insomnia, and reducing your natural resistance to illness. With Reiki alternative medicine healing; energy healing; your life energy is brought back into balance, you feel more rested, stronger, can more easily deal with everyday stress and increased resistance to disease. This type of alternative healing has been documented to naturally reverse many illnesses and reduce patient recovery time after medical procedures.
Reiki is an effective means of hands on healing that restores, re-balances and increases a person’s supply and natural flow of life energy.
What is a Reiki Session Like? Reiki treatments are administered through the healing hands of a fully certified Reiki practitioner with the client lying fully clothed on a massage table. A session typically lasts 1 hour. The Reiki practitioner places his or her hands at locations around the head and shoulders, the abdomen and on the legs and feet. Tissue is not manipulated. The practitioner’s hands are simply held at each location, lightly touching or slightly away from the body. Reiki energy flows from the Reiki practitioner’s hands and into the client’s body and energy field. A fit Reiki session feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that surrounds and fills the client and includes feelings of relaxation, peace and well-being that also promote healing.
Cosmic Healing Light and Reiki Benefits – Reiki energy allows muscles to relax and increases blood flow to treated areas, which in turn quickens the healing process. Practitioners and clients report help with stress, headaches, insomnia, upset stomach, sprains and other minor conditions. Miraculous results in some patients have been reported. Reiki also promotes psychological healing, including release of anger, fear, worry, sadness and other unhealthy feelings, and replaces them with self-worth, confidence and tranquility.
Benefits could include: (a) Quickly bringing your body into a deep state of centered relaxation; (b) Increasing mental clarity and awareness; (c) Relieving and safely releasing stress; (d) Improving how the left and right brain hemispheres work together; (e) Energizing the chakras and the corresponding organs; (f) Improving the flow of energy throughout the body; and (g) Increasing and Radiating vibrational harmony.
Reiki is capable of healing anything because it works at very fundamental levels of reality. Even though the capability is there, this is not what always happens. The limits to Reiki seem to be in the recipients’ willingness to cast off old habits and patters, to accept change and to accept healing. The level of reality where Reiki operates is the underlying energy structure of matter, as the physical matter we see around us is a solidified form of energy. At the level where Reiki functions, anything can be changed because of all if fluid-like and very malleable. Emotional difficulties are just as healable as physical ones since emotional issues are even more directly present in the energy structures.
In this context, the word Healing has a somewhat different meaning from the widely accepted meaning. The widely accepted meaning for healing seems to be curing of symptoms, for that seems to be what medical doctors and the like look to do in their practice. The other meaning for healing, used in the practice of Reiki as well as other related areas, is the return to greater wholeness. There is an ideal form each of us has, this ideal form being the highest and clearest expression of who we are. Pain or disease comes from any deviation between the person’s current form in the 3D physical world and this ideal form. Healing, then, is to bring this physical form into closer alignment with the ideal form.
In any healing the goal is to find the limitation, recognize the pattern, recognize where it came from, and let it go. Reiki accomplishes this by providing the recipient enough energy to step above (metaphorically) to see all that and have the courage to let go. This usually does not happen consciously as a result of Reiki, but sometimes it does happen that Reiki gives the recipient the conscious awareness of the pattern and recognizing where it came from. Our lives are a constant flow of patterns of activity (such as the pattern used to accomplish eating breakfast) and it is our choice to have these patterns remain stuck in limited expression, or to release the old patterns and try on new and shinier ones.
Reiki is also a gateway shining pure love into the universe. It is this love which allows us to transcend our wounds and help us remember our true nature. While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. Because Reiki comes from God, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.
